Paying for help at home

You'll get a personal budget to pay for help at home. You may have to pay something towards it. We will do a financial assessment to work out how much you have to pay.

Direct payments

We will pay your direct payment onto your direct payment card every 4 weeks.

Direct payment card

Your direct payment card works in a similar way to a debit card.

Money is put onto your card by the council for you to spend on your agreed care and help which is noted in your Support Plan.  You must only use your card for this purpose.

When we set up your card you can have it either in your own name or in the name of a nominated person who can make your care payments.

Payments onto your direct payment card

We will pay in your direct payment every 4 weeks.

You will need to pay in your contribution towards the cost of your care, where you have been assessed as having to do so.

Stopping your direct payments

We may move you to a managed budget if you:

  • spend the money on things that weren’t agreed
  • can’t manage a direct payment
  • are no longer able to make decisions because you ‘lack mental capacity’ – eg due to dementia or a serious brain injury
  • don’t want to use direct payments any more
