Community Heritage Initiative

The Community Heritage Initiative is working with local communities to encourage people to record and celebrate the biodiversity and natural heritage of Leicestershire and Rutland.  This Leicestershire County Council project is also supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rutland County Council.

Wildlife Surveys

Volunteers are needed, in every parish across Leicestershire and Rutland, to help record natural history information. A variety of wildlife and countryside surveys.are available, and no expert knowledge is needed.

Conservation in the County

Leicestershire County Council works with other organisations around the two counties to safeguard our natural heritage.
Use our wildlife records mapping search to see what records are held for the wildlife sites in the counties.

Training

The Community Heritage Initiative runs training and information sessions throughout the year.
Whether you are interested in learning more about the countryside and its history, getting involved with some of CHI’s projects or are new to the subject, all of our free sessions are designed to help you develop knowledge, skills and confidence.

Heritage Wardens

The Heritage Warden network is made up of volunteers who help monitor and conserve the rich heritage of Leicestershire & Rutland’s countryside and landscape.

Working with young people

CHI is keen to work with young people to create a broad range of opportunities with hands on experiences to show you don’t have to be an expert to get involved with natural history.  Find out more about how we work with young people.

Heritage Information

The Community Heritage Initiative advises groups and individuals about wider heritage issues, and signposts people to information sources.
Branchline is a quarterly publication detailing the latest local heritage, wildlife and conservation news.  Download the latest edition of Branchline here.

Working with Groups

Leicestershire and Rutland’s natural history societies are crucial in providing records and carrying out surveys in the counties.  Without them, there would be a much poorer picture of distribution and changes that occur.  With global warming, monitoring these changes is becoming ever more important.
