The Road of the Dead by Kevin Brooks

The Road of the Dead by Kevin Brooks

The plot...

A story of murder and revenge set in a landscape as dark and forbidding as the characters portrayed. Brothers Ruben and Cole learn that their sister, Rachel, has been murdered. She has been found strangled, hundreds of miles from their East End home. Together they set out to find out what happened to her and retrace her final steps. For ages 15+

...What the Judges said

This is original, fast paced storytelling that offers teenagers an uncompromising, powerful novel. The hero is untraditional, yet compelling; the story dark and violent, yet the violence is never gratuitous; it warns about the dangers of violence but is never didactic. This is superb writing.

What Leicestershire said...

A compelling read.Brooks's usual straightforward approach but I felt that the language was richer and more rhythmic than in some of his previous novels. Not convinced by Ruben as narrator via ESP.
A good read, but not sufficiently outstanding to deserve this award.
I would recommend this book to older teenagers who enjoy thrillers.
Pearl S gave it two stars
I agree with Pearl S in  that this was quite a compelling read to start with, but disagree with the judges in that I found the violence quite gratuitous. Also found the ESP thing unconvincing.
I would recommend it to older teens with a taste for a bit of gore.
Maggie B gave it two stars
I think this book is good :) The portrayal of the characters was really well done and thought out. The relationship between Cole and Ruben isn't the normal relationship between siblings and they are more look best friends. The book's supernatural element gives the book unexpected occurances
It isn't the usual kind of book that I would read but I found it really enjoyable.
This book was recommended to me by my local librarian and I am really pleased with the recommendation because I didnt expect to like the book but I did. I think this book is more for males who are age 13 and above.
Melissa (aged 16) gave it Three Stars
