Hinckley Area Library Timeline


1820s Thomas Short operated a subscription library in The Borough, Hinckley.
1840 Theological Book Society operated for Church of England communicants in Hinckley.
   Mechanics` Institute established by Joseph Dare in Hinckley opened a reading room.
1850 Public Library Act.
1852 The YMCA opened a reading room in Trinity Lane, Hinckley
1857 John Hays left a bequest to establish a free library "for the use of the Stockingers, Mechanics, Artificers and other labouring classes of Hinckley"
1866 Literary Institute opened in Market Place, Hinckley, with reading rooms.
1874 Hinckley`s first public library opened in The Borough in premises now occupied by Gameworld.
   Mechanics` Institute offered a reading room and an extensive library in Castle Street.
1875 Hinckley Free Library catalogue published.
1877 The Library Association established as the national body for library workers.
1885 First exams for librarians offered by The Library Association.
   Town meeting decides to build a new public library in Hinckley.
1888 Hinckley`s first purpose-built public library opened in Station Road (16th May).
1889 Lending library opened at Hinckley library.
1911 New library catalogue published and sold at 3d (1.5p) a copy.
1920 Electric lighting installed in the Hinckley library.
1924 New library catalogue published.
1927 Open access to the bookstock allowed to borrowers for the first time at the Hinckley library.
1928 First qualified librarian, Mr William Percy Preston, appointed at Hinckley.
1929 First junior assistant, Miss Collier, appointed at the Hinckley library, with a salary of 10/- (50p) a week.
   Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme introduced for the arrangement of factual books at Hinckley library (the same scheme is in use today)
1936 Branch libraries opened in The Barracks, Barwell, and off Wood Street, Earl Shilton.
1938 Branch library opened at Canning House, Church Street, Burbage.
1945 Barwell branch moved to Shilton Road ( to a former air raid shelter).
1947 Barwell branch moved to The Cedars, Shilton Road.
1948 "Juvenile Section" opened in St.Mary`s parish hall, Hinckley.
1950 Barwell branch moved to Malt Mill Bank.
1961 "Juvenile Section" moved into Hinckley library`s main building.
1963 New Burbage branch opened in Church Street (3rd October).
1968 Hinckley library expanded into the adjacent former Hinckley Urban District Council Offices.
1969 New Barwell branch opened in Malt Mill Bank (17th June).
1971 New Earl Shilton branch opened in Wood Street (25th November)
1972 Compulsory purchase of former hosiery factory in Lancaster Road, Hinckley, for new library.
1974 Hinckley, Barwell, Burbage and Earl Shilton libraries become branches of Leicestershire County Council library service following local government reorganisation.
   Sound recordings loan service introduced at Hinckley library with vinyl discs (LPs) hired at 3p a week.
1975 New Hinckley library opened in Lancaster Road – opened to the public on 26th June, and officially inaugurated on 7th October.
   Tourist Information Centre opened in Hinckley Library
1978 Introduction of computerised book issuing at Hinckley library – the first public library in the county to go "live" (2nd October).
1991 On-line catalogue introduced at Hinckley library.
1993 County Council Service Shop opened in Hinckley library
1994 Hinckley library reader makes the 70 millioneth request to the British Library.
1997 CD-rom introduced at Hinckley Library.
1998 Bookstart scheme to introduce babies and toddlers to books introduced at Hinckley Library
1999 Internet access introduced at Hinckley Library
2000 150 years of public libraries and 25th anniversay of Hinckley`s Lancaster Road library.
