Spring 2009 - Primary courses and meetings

Creating effective library displays

A repeat of a successful course, run by the Alternative Display Company, a team of professional display artists who teach participants to create eye-catching displays on a limited budget. Equally applicable to non-library situations, this practical and enjoyable workshop is always enthusiastically received by teachers and library staff and has become a regular feature of our Inset programme.

Raising standards of writing through making books

This course aims to help teachers put creativity at the centre of learning, investigate cross-curricular approaches to literacy teaching and explore ways of engaging reluctant writers. The course will be led by Paul Johnson, who is renowned for his courses and publications on developing literacy through the book arts. Participants will learn basic paper engineering techniques to create over twenty different book forms, each focused on a particular genre of writing, across curriculum subjects and for all ages and abilities.

This is a termly meeting for library staff in secondary schools and colleges. Acting both as a user group for LSE and a support group for school library staff, it provides an opportunity to share good practice and discuss issues of common concern and interest regarding school library provision.

Web 2.0: the basics

What exactly is Web 2.0, what are the implications for school libraries and how can its resources be used to enhance library services to staff and students? This half-day course will be ideal for anyone who feels they need to expand their knowledge of the Internet and would like to be a step (or two) ahead of their students. The course, led by well-known Internet consultant Phil Bradley, will include opportunities for hands-on work.

And what role does the school library play? These are some of the issues that will be explored during the course of this stimulating day by award-winning author and educational consultant, Alan Gibbons.

Librarians from LSE present a selection of the best newly published fiction and poetry. These informal sessions enable teachers and library staff in primary schools to maintain their knowledge of current children’s literature and support wider reading priorities.
