![]() Technology GalleryThe existing gallery looks at developments in transport, engineering and the extractive industries (coal mining, quarrying etc), in Leicestershire and beyond. The photographs below show what is currently in the space that we are proposing to change.
In the proposed new gallery we want to explore themes relating to the impact of technology on our every day lives with a mix of objects from our collection and interactive exhibits. Themes that have been suggested include how the development of technology as affected our homes, working life and leisure time.
The Beam Engine at Snibston.
This impressive steam powered machine is currently situated in the middle of the main gallery in the Engineering Section. It is still operational and is regularly demonstrated by trained members of staff. ![]() The Brush Locomotive
This restored steam engine is currently one of the exhibits in the Transport Section of the main gallery. There is also an exhibition of buses, bicycles, an Auster aircraft and various other vehicles including a milk float and a fire engine. Tudor Mine Shaft
This exhibit is currently on display within the Extractive Industries section of the main gallery. It is the highlight of a series of models and backdrops of coalmining through the ages. There are some fascinating objects as part of this exhibition. In addition to the main transport, engineering and extractive industry sections of the gallery there is also an Under 5's soft play area, an exhibition about toys and games, Light Fantastic and an area that houses some old interactive exhibits from Science Alive (this was replaced by the Extra Ordinary Gallery in 2005).
