Copy Certificates required for family history/genealogyA postal service operates for obtaining copy birth, death and marriage certificates for events occurring in Leicestershire.
The Civil records of Births, Deaths and Marriages began in 1837. These are held locally at the Register Office in whose district the Birth, Death or Marriage took place. Copies of all registrations were also sent quarterly to the General Register Office, from which their indexes were compiled. These General Register Office indices are reproduced and made available to public libraries for public access. The reference numbers quoted in these indices enable the public to apply to the General Register Office for a certified copy (or certificate) of the event, at a cost of £8.50 if the reference number is quoted. These indices provide a useful starting point when the exact date or place of a given event is not known.
Unfortunately, the references found on the General Register Office indices do not have any relevance to records held locally. If the date and place of the event is known, an application can be made to the Register Office local to the place of the event. In order to locate and identify an entry of Birth, Death or Marriage as the one of which a copy is required, you will be required to provide as much of the following information as possible.
