Domestic Violence

Leicestershire County Council’s response to Domestic Violence is one aspect of the Council’s work with its partners on Community Safety.

Tackling domestic violence is an important issue for Leicestershire County Council and a priority within Leicestershire’s Local Area Agreement.

In order to reduce domestic violence within Leicestershire the County Council will work with partners towards the following aims:

To raise awareness of the impact and seriousness of domestic violence with all local residents, young people and perpetrators to prevent domestic violence and its escalation.
To support victims & survivors of domestic violence, including children.
To provide measures which will protect victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Domestic Violence Protocol for Schools

SCHOOLS are being given guidance and information to help them support children and young people over domestic violence issues.

The domestic violence protocol for schools has been developed to help children in primary and secondary schools who have experienced, or are experiencing, domestic violence within the family to access support.

It is estimated that one in four women and one in six men will experience domestic violence at some point in their lives. Many of these are parents with children living with them.

The impact of domestic violence is huge and we feel that schools can offer support and undertake preventative work in order to tackle domestic violence.

The protocol includes written guidance and information. It details the impact of domestic violence on children, young people, parents and carers; it gives information on support services and how to respond if a child says they are experiencing domestic violence. There are also resources to use as part of the curriculum.

The aim is to support children to remain in education and to help school staff understand the impact of domestic violence and how a child may be affected and respond.

Cracking Conflicts - Alternatives to Violence (CC-AV)

Educational programme for schools

The CC-AV Programme provides interactive and engaging activities for young people on domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. Trained facilitators can deliver one hour sessions for young people aged 13 and over (in schools or youth settings), addressing a range of issues relating to interpersonal violence and building positive relationships. Facilitators support the school to ensure sessions take place in a safe setting as part of either the PSHE or Citizenship curriculum. As well as supporting the County’s Domestic Violence Protocol for Schools, CC-AV sessions also address the five outcomes of Every Child Matters.
