Burton Overy Parish Walks
About
Burton Overy
Its
north-eastern boundary runs alongside the Gartree Road, a Roman road which ran from Leicester to Medbourne,
and ultimately to Colchester. It is not now passable along its entire length, but some parts are still
in use. When passing through pasture land on these routes, look out for the pattern of ridge and furrow,
remnants of open field cultivation.

- There are 3 different walks in the Burton Overy area: two are 3.25 miles
and one is 2.75 miles.
- All of the paths are waymarked.

The
Routes

Walk 1 5¼km (3¼miles), allow 1 hour, gentle and relatively flat, with great views across the valley to Little Stretton & King’s Norton. From the Bell Inn walk down Main Street, past the church into Scotland. Continue around the corner and at Highcroft Farm, take the footpath on the left
A. Bear left towards an old nissan hut. Once through the kissing gate go right crossing to a field gate. Then walk with the hedge on the right. Seek a stile in the far hedge to cross into the next field
B. Aim to the left of the trees ahead to find a gap into the next field
C. On reaching Gartree Road, now a field track, turn left and follow this to eventually meet a road.
D. Turn left, then after 210 metres turn left again onto a bridleway (the blue arrows, not the yellow for the footpath). Walk through the fi eld with the hedge on the left, once through the gate turn right with the hedge now
on the right.
E. Cross the next field and brook, then head uphill towards the old barn in the field corner. Follow the path to the right to return to Scotland and the start point.

Walk 2 5¼km (3¼ miles), allow 2½ hours, very gentle undulating countryside From the Bell Inn, walk up Carlton Lane heading for Carlton. After the cattle grid follow the footpath sign to the left, crossing the field diagonally to reach a stile. In the next field maintain the same direction to meet the road.
1. Cross another cattle grid then turn right onto a footpath. Walk diagonally to the protruding field corner. Maint1in the same direction for the next three fields.
2. At the lane turn right. After the stream go right following the fingerpost for the “Bridle Road Carlton” which eventually meets on the road in Carlton Curlieu.
3. Turn right then right again heading back to Burton Overy. Soon after the Old Rectory take the footpath left, aiming for the farm building on the hill.
4. At the farm, walk to the right of the buildings then out to the road. Turn left to return to the village.

Walk 3 4½km (2¾ miles), allow 1 hour, very flat From the Bell Inn turn right down Bell Lane then left into Beadswell Lane. As the lane bends left go straight on to the footpath running alongside the private track to houses.
i. Cross the stile into the fi eld then follow the way markers straight across the next three fields to meet with and walk along the brook, eventually reaching the road.
ii. Turn right, then just before the Gamekeepers Lodge turn right again to the bridleway. Pass the pond on the right. In the next field with the sewage works, turn left and head up the field. Continue to follow the waymark post to Oak Road.
iii. Turn right and when the road bends to the left carry straight on. Follow the waymarkers for the bridleway back to Burton Overy.
