Cycle TrailsAshby Woulds Heritage Trail![]() The trail from Moira to Measham in north west Leicestershire passes through countryside rich in social and industrial history. Starting at Overseal Sidings near Bath Lane Moira the trail follows the disused Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway opened in 1873, to the old station at Measham.
The coal industry is at the heart of the history of this area of Leicestershire, and has shaped the landscape through which this trail runs. However, the area now falls within what has become the new National Forest and a "Heart of the National Forest" visitors centre has been developed at Bath Lane Moira.
A leaflet on the trail is available from Tourist Information Centres or directly from Leicestershire County Council.
Vital Statistics:Note the Sarah's Wood car park entrance has a height restriction barrier of 2m. Anyone with a larger vehicle should use parking at Conkers Waterside.
Did you know? The Ashby Woulds Heritage Trail runs along the former Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway. Opened in 1873, the railway was built to transport coal from the local pits to London and the South East. The line closed to regular traffic in 1931 and the last goods train ran in 1981.
Sarah’s Wood is a 10 hectare site planted as part of the National Forest. It has been planted with a native woodland and commemorative from around the world in the “Ghandi Goodwill Grove”.
There are open grass areas managed for wildflowers, tarmac surfaced paths suitable for all users and a soft surfaced childrens play area with sandpit.
