Speed reduction scheme

Following local concerns regarding inappropriate speed along Grove Road between the A426 roundabout and Lutterworth Road, Leicestershire County Council has developed a highway scheme to reduce the impact of traffic.
Highest recorded speeds within the 30mph speed limit have been recorded at 36.5mph and within the last five years there have been five injury accidents recorded on this section of road. The aim of the scheme is to promote measures which reduce speed without compromising the emergency services. The scheme will have added benefit to children walking to school and cycling to Stokes Primary School.

Scheme Objectives

  • REDUCE VEHICLE SPEEDS.
  • IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY.
  • PROVIDE MEASURES TO ASSIST PEDESTRIANS CROSSING THE ROAD.

Proposed measures

To achieve the scheme objectives, Leicestershire County council proposes the following;

Junction Table

At its junction with Heybrook Avenue, it is proposed to install a raised junction table. This measure is very good at reducing speeds and can accommodate a safer crossing feature for pedestrians. This will be of particular benefit  to the school crossing patrol who operate at this location.

Speed Cushions

Speed cushions have been chosen as they address the scheme objectives without adversely affecting emergency service response times and ride comfort, since the majority of emergency vehicles can staddle the features.The speed cushions will be laid 3 abreast and should not compromise local parking. As with current practice, should parking occur on both sides of the road, motorists will be able to drive down the centreline of the carriageway and straddle the central speed cushion.where it is safe to do so, 1.6 metre wide speed cushions are proposed and an example of this feature can be found locally on Lutterworth Road.

Cycle Scheme

Cyclists can feel extremely vunerable at large and busy roundabouts, often choosing a route to avoid them or seeking other alternative transport arrangements to cross them.
The busy A426 Blaby bypass / Grove Road roundabout is such a junction that cyclist have difficulty crossing.
To address this it is proposed to improve facilities around the island by providing new and upgrading existing footway to allow cyclists to share the route with pedestrians.
To keep disruption to a minimum, it is intended construction work will be carried out alongside the Grove Road speed reduction scheme.
