Proposed Safer Route to School Scheme
Latest Update June 2008
Scheme Objectives
The objective of the scheme is to improve road safety, thereby encouraging parents and pupils to walk to school instead of using a car to drop their children off. This will lead to improved health and fitness by increasing the number of pupils walking to and from school.
The scheme outlined below is particularly aimed at reducing vehicle speeds and making it easier to cross Moira Road. These measures not only benefit the existing school walking bus but also pedestrians in general and should go a long way towards acheiving the above objectives.
The Scheme
A scheme has been developed which is aimed at improving the walking bus route to school. The main elements are:
- New zebra crossing on Moira Road
- Speed control cushions on Moira Road either side of the zebra crossing
- Various footway works to further aid pedestrians
