Proposed Bus Stop and Traffic Calming Improvement Scheme

St. Michael's Church, Thurmaston

Latest Update October 2007

A public consultation was carried out for this scheme during November and December 2006 which included a public exhibition held on 7th December 2006.  All comments received relating to the proposed scheme were the subject of a report submitted to the Director of Highways, Transportation and Waste Management.  The Director in consultation with the local County Councillor Mr P Harley and the Lead Elected Member decided to authorise the scheme to go ahead.  The scheme was approved for construction in January 2007.  The scheme was substantially completed in September 2007.

Background

Requests from bus operator Arriva and regular bus passengers were made for bus stop improvements and modifications to the existing traffic calming scheme along Melton Road.
The key concerns raised were poor accessibility to buses due to parked vehicles blocking stops and discomfort and safety due to the severity of existing vertical traffic calming measures.
The local community, Thurmaston Parish Council and County Councillor Mr P. Harley echoed these concerns.

Objectives

Benefits of the scheme are:
  • Safer and more comfortable passenger travel
  • Improved bus stop facilities
  • Improved accessibilty to buses for all passengers
  • Safer parking arrangements
  • Reduced vehicle speeds
  • Improved pedestrian facilities, particularly for the young, elderly and disabled.
  • Increased road safety for all users

The Proposals Consulted Upon

The measures detailed below are to improve bus accessibility and to reduce the impact of traffic calming features on travelling bus passengers whilst still maintaining effective speed reduction along Melton Road.  Therefore a safer environment would be achieved.  The measures include:
  • The removal of 5 speed tables and a mini roundabout
  • The introduction of a series of speed cushions
  • Sheltered parking bays
  • Improvements to bus stop facilities such as raised kerbs, kerbed footway buildouts, bus passenger shelters and bus stop clearway markings.
The street lighting system along Melton Road is also to be upgraded as part of the scheme.
