Loughborough, Burleigh Way Extension

Shared Used Footway/Cycle Track

Picture of disused railway line

Background

Loughborough has been specifically identified in the Leicestershire Local Transport Plan 2006-2011 for investment to improve cycling networks in the town.  Loughborough already experiences high cycle use and the potential for increasing cycle usage is considered siginificant.
Over recent years work funded by both Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council has resulted in the provision of various new and improved routes.
The extension of the cycle track on Burleigh Way would further expand the cycle network in Loughborough, providing a link to the town centre from the west to nearby schools in the vicinity, thereby encouragaing travel on foot or by bike.

The Proposals

  • A 3.0m wide footway/cycle track between Clowbridge Drive and Shortcliff Brook reducing to a 2.5m track between Shortcliff Brook and Pitsford Drive.
  • Street lighting along this route.
  • Flush kerbs and 'elephants feet' carriageway markings provided, as appropriate, at road crossings.

Scheme Objectives

  • Tackling congestion by increasing cycling in Loughborough.
  • To promote sustainable travel to nearby schools and into the town centre.
