Oadby, A6, Leicester RoadProposed bus and cycle improvements.BackgroundThe Leicestershire Local Transport Plan (LTP),2006-2011. contains commitments to help tackle congestion by investing in improvements to a number of Quality Bus corridors along the main routes into Leicester, including the A6.
Nearly 40% of the bus journey time in the morning rush hour on the A6 travelling towards Leicester between the Asda junction and Granville Avenue in Oadby is made up of delays due to queuing south of Palmerston Way.
As a further means of tackling congestion, the LTP also proposes extensions to the cycle route network, including the A6 corridor.
The County Council has therefore included bus and cycle improvements on the A6 between the Asda junction at Oadby and the Glebe Road junction north of the Racecourse roundabout in the construction programme for 2008/09.
The ProposalsTo enable the scheme objectives to be met, the bus improvements will be implemented in a number of phases.
The first phase, shown on the plan consists of a 24 hour bus lane commencing prior to the junction of the A6 Leicester Road with Oadby Hill Drive, to a point just before the filling station north of the Racecourse roundabout.
The bus lane will run in the existing service road, and there will be a break on the approach to the Racecourse roundabout. There will be only a small amount of construction work, to remove the footway buildout immediately north of Granville Avenue and slightly widen the main road near the junction with Oadby Hill Drive and north of the Racecourse roundabout.
An off road cycle track improvement is proposed between Glebe Road and the Asda junction on the outbound side of the A6 Leicester Road, and between Lyndon Drive and the Racecourse roundabout on the inbound side.
There is to be a Toucan crossing - serving both pedestrians and cyclists - at the Asda junction to complement the existing Toucan at Stoughton Drive South, and suitable widening throughout the existing footway.
Further phases of the bus corridor scheme will involve improvements at the Racecourse roundabout and at the junctions of the A6 with Stoughton Drive South, Brabazon Road and The Parade. It is anticipated that these works will take place in 2009/10, following further consultation
