Advice For Driving In Wintry Weather Conditions:
- Ensure your vehicle has been well maintained and serviced. Is the battery in good condition?
- Ensure the tyres (including spare) have a good depth of tread and are properly inflated.
- Always carry a screen scraper and de-icer.
- Ensure windscreen wipers and washers are working effectively. Use a suitable additive in the washer bottle to prevent freezing.
- Ensure ALL WINDOWS and mirrors are clear from frost/snow and all lights are clean and working properly.
- Check local radio for latest weather and travel information.
- Allow extra time for your journey.
- In icy conditions SLOW DOWN, steer gently and avoid harsh braking. Maintain a safe stopping distance behind other vehicles bearing in mind the prevailing conditions.
- Use dipped headlights when driving during snowfalls.
- Remember that not all roads are treated – drive carefully.
In Extreme Conditions:
- Think whether your journey is essential. Could public transport be used instead?
- Ensure someone knows where you are going and when you hope to arrive.
- Take a shovel, torch, wellington boots, warm clothing, food and a hot drink.
- If you break down stay with your vehicle until help arrives. If you have to leave your vehicle make yourself visible to other road users.
