Found near a well in Foxton, this bronze button shows Charles I flanked by his initials 'CR'.
It probably came loose from the clothing of a Royalist soldier fleeing after the Battle of Naseby on June 14th, 1645.
The battle was the most decisive of the English Civil War as the Royalist forces were shattered and the routing soldiers captured or killed in huge numbers. From the distance of Foxton from the battlefield it may be that its owner was one of the few lucky survivors and escaped.
A local myth claims that Charles I himself actually hid in Foxton's church immediately after the battle and although this is unlikely a large chest of Civil War weapons was recovered there.
