Local Agenda 21 Strategy

Ways Forward for A Better Leicestershire, Our Actions - Our Future

In 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio, over one hundred countries including the UK, adopted Agenda 21 which aimed to stimulate a new approach to development. At the heart of Agenda 21 is the link between people, prosperity and the natural environment, addressing today’s pressing problems in order to prepare for the challenges of the 21st Century.

In 1998 Leicestershire published its own Local Agenda 21 strategy designed to translate agreements made at Rio into a local vision which involved the Forum for a Better Leicestershire (FABLE).

The contents of this Local Agenda 21 document have now been superseded by the Leicestershire Community Strategy which includes actions in all three pillars of Agenda 21 – economic, social and environmental. Leicestershire Together is the county’s Local Strategic Partnership and is responsible for overseeing the production of the Community Strategy.  It consists of many partners from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

ENABLE:- ENvironmental Action for a Better Leicestershire is an umbrella of local organisations and members of the public with an interest in environmental protection. This includes District Councils; Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust; Groundwork Leicester and Leicestershire; Leicestershire and Rutland Federation of Women’s Institutes and Leicestershire Diocese amongst others. ENABLE, is the lead partner of Leicestershire Together for environmental actions within the community strategy and also has a seat on the Leicestershire Together board to represent environmental issues.

ENABLE have recently published a number of documents relating to environmental issues in Leicestershire.
To download these publications and to find other news and campaigns on environment issues in the County follow this link to the ENABLE web pages.
