Nature Conservation Strategy

This strategy has been published. No review date has been proposed at present.
The Nature Conservation Strategy was prepared against a background of growing awareness amongst the community, and at all levels of government, of the fragility of the natural environment and the interdependence of nature conservation and social and economic development.
Nature conservation is an essential element of sustainable development, but guidance is needed to define and promote its role.
The Nature Conservation Strategy aims to provide a framework for the management and development of the Leicestershire nature conservation resource in a way that is both dynamic and integrated with the broader planning context.
This framework is intended to achieve more than the conservation of the existing natural heritage of Leicestershire, it also aims to enhance the whole of the Leicestershire landscape and put new emphasis on positive environmental enhancement to reverse the deterioration of the natural environment that has already occurred.
Above all the strategy aims to guide and encourage work towards a vision of Leicestershire which is enhanced by a diverse and vital natural environment that is fully appreciated by Leicestershire people.
The first part of the strategy provides an introduction to the natural heritage of Leicestershire, including the way in which it has developed over time and its prospects for the future. This is followed by a consideration of the benefits of nature conservation, the aims and objectives of the strategy and the Leicestershire context. The next section sets out the policies of the strategy and finally there is a review of the roles and responsibilities of those involved in nature conservation in Leicestershire.
