Supported Accommodation for Older People in Leicestershire

Over the last 10 years the number of people living in care homes has been steadily declining, as more older people prefer to live at home with some support. Supported accommodation (also known as Extra Care) means that people have their own flat or bungalow, but also have access to high levels of personal care, meals, domestic support, leisure and recreation, nursing and 24-hour security.

5th Mar - Leicestershire County Council Cabinet agreed to consult with the public on proposals to develop more supported accommodation for older people as alternatives to residential care. At the moment there are only four Extra Care Schemes in Leicestershire – St. Mary’s House in Lutterworth, Birch Court in Glen Parva, Gretton Court in Melton Mowbray and Connaught House in Loughborough. In total they provide 139 tenancies for older people. They are also all for rent rather than purchase.  No schemes operate in Hinckley & Bosworth, North West Leicestershire and Oadby & Wigston, so these would be priority areas for any new extra care schemes.
