The Research & Information Team carry out crime and disorder research across Leicestershire and Rutland. The information is used primarily by Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRPs) – also known as Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs) – by the County Council, the police and other responsible authorities. There are seven Community Safety Partnerships covering Leicestershire, one for each Local Authority District.

Crime and disorder research has been carried out by the Research & Information Team since 1998, when the Crime and Disorder Act was introduced. The work is jointly funded, a third by Leicestershire County Council, a third by Leicestershire Constabulary and a third by the seven Local Authority District Councils and Rutland County Council (combined).

This research function was originally established to produce the first of the statutory triennial Crime & Disorder Audits (1998). This role has continuously developed and now undertakes a range of research and information activities in addition to the production of the audits. The most recent audits were produced in October 2004. A short annual update is produced at the end of each financial year.
