Local Government in LeicestershireLeicestershire has a 3-tier system of local government, consisting of the County
Council, 7 Borough/District Councils, and Parish Councils. This arrangement applies across the whole
county except for the bigger towns where the Parish level does not exist, and the Borough/District takes
on the work of the Parish Council. The City of Leicester is a separate authority (see below).
There are seven Districts / Boroughs in Leicestershire:

The main responsibilities of Districts and Boroughs are:
Melton Borough Council Offices - Fire May 2008Melton Borough ServicesThere was a major fire at the Melton Borough Council offices on the 30th May 2008.
This has led to the the offices being closed. For more information about the effect

County Council ServiceThis has not had a great effect on County Council services apart from those shown
below.
Registration of births marriages and deathsThe Registration Service office based in the Melton Borough Council Offices has
been closed. Please see Leicestershire Registration Service for more details.

Responsibilities of Parish and Town Councils include:
Elections for Parish Councillors take place every 4 years.
The City of Leicester * is a separate
authority. It is a "unitary" authority and is responsible for all local government in the
city.
