Role of Health ScrutinyHealth Service
The Health and Social Care Act 2001 extended the powers of Overview and Scrutiny Committees of social services authorities to include the power to review and scrutinise matters relating to the health service in the area and to make reports and recommendations on these matters.
The County Council has agreed to establish a joint committee with Leicester City Council and Rutland Council, as social services authorities, to scrutinise health bodies with responsibility of health functions across the areas of these three authorities ie. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, the Leicestershire Partnership Trust and the East Midlands Ambulance Trust Joint Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee:
The County Council has also established an Adult Social Care and Health Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee which has responsibility for scrutiny of health and social care issues affecting the county. As such this Committee will have responsibility for scrutinising the new Leicestershire County and Rutland Primary Care Trust.
