Minimum legal age

There are many laws that deal with the sale of age-restricted products and services.  The minimum age traders are permitted to sell age restricted products are noted below.  Business companion - underage sales also provide full list of age restricted products and advice on preventing sales of an age-restricted product to a person below the legal age.

18 years and over

Consumers must be 18 years and over to purchase:

  • tobacco
  • fireworks and sparklers
  • alcohol
  • knives, axes or blades
  • lighter refills containing butane
  • nicotine inhaling products (including c-cigarettes and e-liquid / vape juice)
  • videos, DVDs and computer games with a 18+ classification

16 years and over

To purchase aerosol paint, consumers must be 16 years and over.

15 years and over

Videos, DVDs and computer games with a 15+ classification can only be purchased by consumers 15 years and over.

12 years and over

Consumers must be 12 years and over to purchase:

  • christmas crackers
  • videos, DVDs and computer games with a 12+ classification
