School transport for 5 to 16 year olds

Your child may be able to get free transport to school if they live further from their school than the walking distance allowed by law or if you’re on a low income. It will depend on where you live and which school your child goes to.

Other transport options

You may be able to get season tickets and discounted fares on public transport for your child’s journey to school.

School specials

There may be buses run by commercial bus operators to your child’s school or college. These are known as ‘school specials’. Ask the school or college for more information.

Public transport

Use the Choose How You Move journey planner to find out about public transport between your home and your child’s school or college.

You may be able to get a weekly, monthly or termly season ticket or other types of ticket discounts. Check with the bus company that runs the service. The journey planner results will tell you which bus company operates the route.

Bus and coach companies

These companies run buses and coaches to schools and colleges and may offer season or discounted tickets:
