Leicestershire County Council's free tree schemes for farmers and landowners to plant trees, woodland and hedges in rural areas of the county.

Free trees and hedges for new planting

Targeting Tree Disease packs

Working with the Woodland Trust, the county council are offering all landowners and farmers free tree packs, which have been specifically designed to help renew and restore existing woodland and hedges to help regenerate countryside that is under threat from tree diseases such as Ash Dieback.

These packs are available to applicants from across the county. Each pack includes 45 native trees and applicants can chose form two different species mixes:

  • Mix 1 – birch, hornbeam and oak
  • Mix 2 – birch, oak and wild cherry

All the trees come with 1.2m tree tubes and stakes.

Planting

Applicants are responsible for planting the trees, either yourself or using a contractor. Advice can be given by the Woodland Trust.

Please email plant@woodlandtrust.org.uk with your name and contact details, or call on 0330 333 5303 making sure you quote 'Leicestershire County Council trees'. The deadline for applications is 31 October 2018.

Tree packs must be collected by applicants from designated locations. The exact date will be confirmed by the tree nurseries nearer the time but will be in the last week of November.

Free woodland creation and hedgerow packs for new planting

Working with the Woodland Trust and with funding from the district councils, we are offering all landowners and farmers in Blaby, Charnwood and Hinckley & Bosworth districts 2 schemes for the remainder of 2018-2019 aimed at increasing tree and woodland cover along with hedgerows for improving habitat connectivity.

If you are outside of these three districts but interested in planting hedgerows, trees and woodland then please contact the Woodland Trust at the email address or phone number below, as packs are available for purchase.

If you are a member of a community group, parish council or school you can apply for free trees at woodlandtrust.org.uk/freetrees.

MOREhedges

This free pack is for planting a minimum of 100m of new hedgerow and consists of 475 shrubs and 25 trees ideally for planting every 20 metres. Any remaining trees can be planted elsewhere on the site or at either end of the hedge. Species include:

  • Hawthorn
  • Blackthorn
  • Hazel
  • Field maple
  • Crab apple
  • Dog rose
  • Dogwood

The application deadline is the end of January 2019. Choice of tree species decided on application.

MOREwoods

This is a free pack of trees and shrubs to plant a woodland, starting at 0.5 ha (1.25 acres) in size.

All the trees/shrubs are one to two year old saplings - around 40-60cm - and will provide canopy and shade within 10 years. All the trees come with suitable protection from rabbits and/or deer.

Application deadline is the end of January 2019.
