Council leader backs fight against scams

Leicestershire at forefront of awareness campaign

Council leader Nick Rushton is at the forefront of local support for a national initiative to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams.

The Friends Against Scams scheme, run by National Trading Standards, aims to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem and change people’s perceptions of why people fall victim to scams.

The county council is being recognised as a Friends Against Scams organisation in a bid to encourage more people to spread the word and to take a stand against scams.

Last year alone, the county council's trading standards team provided support to more than 200 victims of postal, telephone and doorstep scams. These successful interventions prevented the victims incurring further losses, although it was estimated that collective losses were in the region of £500,000.

As part of the scheme, county council employees will also be trained about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim.

I’m delighted to be supporting this initiative, especially as the number of people falling victim to rogue traders and scams is on the increase. Our trading standards officers have already does a great job to raise awareness of the issue in Leicestershire, and now all of our staff have the chance to be trained to spot the signs.

Louise Baxter, scams team manager at National Trading Standards, said: "The tactics used by scammers leave victims socially isolated and they are often ashamed about telling their friends and families what's really going on behind closed doors.

“It is fantastic to have such an influential figure involved in supporting the initiative to help us tackle this problem on a local level in Leicestershire. I would encourage all those that are interested in showing their support to join the campaign and be part of our growing Friends Against Scams network."

If you or someone you know have been targeted by a scam and you would like to report it or want advice, please call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06.

Trading Standards officers will be hosting a series of roadshows across Leicestershire from Monday 6th August to Thursday 9th August which will promote scam awareness and encourage residents to become a friend against scams.
