Early help for mental health

Youngsters suffering from anxiety, depression or stress can receive early help, by borrowing a book to boost their mental health.

The number of 15-16-year- olds frequently feeling anxious or depressed has doubled over the last 30 years, increasing the need for mental health information to be available for children and young people in Leicestershire.

All 16 major libraries across the county have started to stock a range of books that GPs believe can help children and young people manage common mental health conditions. Known as Shelf Help, this initiative is part of a national library scheme, Reading Well books on prescription.

The 30 Shelf Help titles are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. The books provide 13-18-year-old readers with information, support and advice on a range of issues - from eating disorders and self- harm, to bullying and exams.
