A charity has opened a new café supporting people with life-limiting conditions, thanks to a SHIRE grant.

Hospice Hope, a North West Leicestershire based charity, has been supporting people in the district living with a life-limiting condition and their families since its inception in 2002.

Figures from the last census in 2011 revealed that 25 per cent of households in North West Leicestershire contain a person with a long-term health problem or disability.

The new café in Bondgate, Castle Donington, was awarded a grant by our SHIRE community grants programme, which aims to support community projects.

Stewart Shepherd, chair at Hospice Hope, said that the support café’s launch would mean a lot to those suffering from life-limiting conditions in Castle Donington.

He said: “There can be a lot of loneliness after a life-limiting condition has been diagnosed. By providing a listening ear and peer to peer networking with friendly people in a warm environment, we help to overcome this and give support towards a positive view on the future.”

We are proud that our SHIRE grants have supported the opening of another Hospice Hope Support Café, helping this charity to continue its great work across North West Leicestershire.

Hospice Hope runs three other support cafés in Ashby de la Zouch, Coalville, and Ibstock, plus a day centre, Hope House in Griffydam, which offers extensive and vital support at a local and easily accessible level to people with life-limiting conditions, their carers and family members.

Local, accessible amenities and support are so important in building strong communities. We are sure that those affected by life-limiting conditions in Castle Donington will appreciate this new resource.

The SHIRE grant, together with support received from the Rotary Club of Castle Donington, has provided the start-up funding for the group and ensures that access to this important service for local people affected by a life-limiting condition remains free and unlimited, as per the charity’s other services.

Hospice Hope’s Support Café will run every Monday afternoon on a drop-in basis from 1.30pm to 4pm. All refreshments are free of charge.
