Youngsters set to embark on cycle race through Leicestershire villages
A cycle race will take place through county villages

Roads in Slawston and Cranoe will make way for future Olympic hopefuls in September as the School Games 2017 arrives in Leicestershire.

On Sunday, 3 September, roads in the villages will host elite cycle races for youngsters aged 13 to 16 as part of the four-day major national multi-sport event.

A number of routes across the two villages will be closed to traffic between 7am and 3pm, while the races take place, to ensure the safety of those taking part.

The roads that will close include:

• Slawston Road, Cranoe – from Langton Road, Slawston to Main Street, Slawston
• Welham Road, Slawston – from Main Street, Slawston to Slawston Road, Welham
• Slawston Road, Welham – from Main Street, Slawston to Bowden Lane, Welham
• Welham Lane, Cranoe – from Slawston Road, Welham to Welham Lane, Cranoe

It’s wonderful news that Slawston and Cranoe have been chosen to host this national sporting event to inspire and support potential future Olympians.

“We’ve worked with the organisers of the event to reduce the impact to residents and businesses in the area and hope the community gets behind the games to cheer on all those taking part.

The youngsters will start on Main Street, Slawston, where the cyclists will take an anti-clockwise circular route towards Cranoe. Traffic marshals will be at key junctions to ensure motorists are aware of alternative routes.

Residents and businesses will also be able to access the villages during set windows throughout the day to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Anyone with particular access requirements or concerns should contact group.support@leics.gov.uk or call 0116 305 0001.

Access times are still to be finalised, they will be published on www.leicestershire.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/cycling-and-walking/school-games-cycle-event as soon as they are available with a hard copy being available on request.
