Statement on road maintenance funding

Council welcomes announcement to support prevention work

Worker fixing potholes

Chancellor Rishi Sunak pledged an extra £2.5bn for road maintenance in today’s Budget. The cash will mean councils will get an extra £500m a year over five years.

The Treasury said the cash will fix ‘up to 50 million potholes’, but will also be available for local authorities to undertake longer-term road resurfacing works to prevent them from appearing in the first place.

We welcome the announcement in the Budget, but we’re still awaiting further detail. We’re determined to tackle potholes and the most effective way is to carry out preventative work to stop them forming in the first place. This funding announcement will support that work.

The county council announced its own budget plans last month and has committed more than £7m to road maintenance next year.
