Re-register a birth

Re-registering means making a new record in the birth register.

To re-register the birth of your child, you’ll need to contact the registration office where they were born, not where you or your child live now.

You can do this at any time regardless of your child’s age.

There’s no charge but should you wish to get a new birth certificate normal fees will apply.

If your child was born in the county of Leicestershire (not Leicester City), book an appointment on 0116 305 6565.

Re-registering a birth is very specific process and cannot be used to make a correction to a birth entry.

Corrections to birth records

In certain circumstances it may be possible to change the details or add information to the original registration.

For more information, contact the registration office for the district where the child was born.
