As part of the Department for Transport’s Covid-19 Emergency Active Travel Fund, we were awarded funding for a series of works to encourage and support walking and cycling throughout the county.

This fund was for temporary measures to help encourage and support the increase of active and sustainable travel experienced during the lockdown.

Update March 2021:

The trial period of these schemes has now ended. We appreciate all the engagement from residents and road users, from this and analysis of the use of the measures, the below decisions have been agreed.

A6 Loughborough Road, Birstall:

  • Removal of temporary on-carriageway cycle lanes
  • Reinstatement of central hatched areas and right turn facilities
  • Removal of temporary signalised crossing
  • Reinstatement of traffic/pedestrian islands (with wider versions installed where possible)
  • Implementation of new permanent 30mph speed limit, subject to consultation

These works are planned to take place in May 2021. We will keep residents informed as details of the 30mph consultation are confirmed.

A47 Hinckley Road, Leicester Forest East:

  • Retainment of new cycle lanes with additional safety measures including dropped kerbs, additional signage and minor lining adjustments

These works are planned to take place in June 2021.

Kettering Road, Market Harborough:

  • Retainment of the widened cycle lanes (kerbs and bollards)
  • Replacement of temporary traffic signals with permanent signalling equipment

These works are planned to take place in July 2021.

We will continue to work closely with residents to support safer walking and cycling in Leicestershire. Further details of the dates of works will be confirmed here as they become available.
