M1 junction 23 and A512 improvement scheme

Improvements to A512 and M1 Junction 23 are now under way. Due to take eighteen months to complete, the second stage of the project will include improvements to support future development and traffic growth between Loughborough and Shepshed.

The scheme which is being funded by developers with an additional £5 million from Highways England and £12 million from the Leicester, Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership Limited (LLEP) involves:

  • improvements to three junctions along the A512 near Shepshed
  • improvements to the M1 Junction 23; and
  • upgrading the single carriageway to dual carriageway between Junction 23 and Snells Nook Lane, Loughborough

Schedule of work

Morgan Sindall are delivering the scheme on behalf of the county council. Below is a schedule of works or road closures due to take place.

  • Monday 21 October between 9.30am and 3.30pm temporary traffic lights will be operating on the Charnwood Road Junction, Shepshed. These temporary lights will ensure a safe working environment for BT engineers to carry out diversions around the junction. We will remove the lights as soon as BT have completed their works

  • Monday 14 October until Friday 18 October between 8pm and 6am, there will be two-way traffic lights in place on the A512 opposite the Hurst farm entrance. The traffic lights will allow us to build a haul route on the northern verge. The lights will be removed as soon as the work is complete.
