Is adoption the right path for you?

As part of National Adoption Week, Family Adoption Links Leicestershire is highlighting the need for more adoptive families for children in Leicestershire, including sibling groups who can often face longer waits to find a permanent home together. ✍️Hannah and Adam, adopters, share their journey.

Like many prospective adopters, their journey began with efforts to conceive. After several years without success, they explored fertility treatment but found themselves increasingly drawn towards adoption.

Attending an adoption information event hosted by Family Adoption Links Leicestershire helped them better understand the process and the support available to adoptive parents.

"We were asked to take some time to reflect on the decision not to pursue fertility treatment," said Hannah. "During that time, our hearts for adoption grew, especially after talking to friends and family and hearing the experiences of people who had adopted."

Throughout the assessment process, Hannah and Adam received support from social workers who introduced them to therapeutic parenting approaches and practical tools, including the PACE model.

"The process involved waiting periods and some intense assessments," Hannah explained. "But we used that time to reflect and focus on what we were working towards."

As they learned more about the children waiting for adoption, they began to think about how they could make the greatest difference.

"We started considering the wider needs of children waiting for families," said Adam. "Hearing that sibling groups can sometimes wait longer to be matched really shaped our desire to adopt brothers and sisters together."

While adoption brought incredible rewards, they acknowledge that it also came with challenges.

"You get asked questions that most parents never have to answer," said Hannah. "But it's essential because these children may have experienced so much in their early lives. The process helps prepare you to give them the love, understanding and support they need."

Following placement, ongoing support proved invaluable.

"We had a fantastic support network around us and an incredible social worker," Hannah added. "She didn't just check on the children, she made sure we were okay too."

"If we ever had questions, someone was always there to help us find the answers. That support made a huge difference."

Looking back, Hannah and Adam say the rewards have far outweighed the challenges.

It's wonderful to see our children, who are biological siblings, growing up together and sharing life's experiences side by side. There have been so many beautiful moments that have melted our hearts. It's all been worth it.

For anyone considering adoption, Hannah and Adam offer simple advice...

"Go into it with your eyes wide open. Understand the challenges, learn about children's experiences and make use of the support available. At the end of the day, it's about giving a child a safe, loving home and a family they can belong to."
