“Even after having my baby, I’ve stayed smoke-free and don’t plan on going back”

✍ Bethany, pregnancy QuitReady client, shares how our specialist advisor Barbora helped her quit smoking for good

I decided to try quitting smoking after my first midwife appointment. The carbon monoxide test came back high and it really made me think about what I was putting into my body, especially while pregnant.

Supported by QuitReady, I switched to vaping and at first it was really difficult, especially in the mornings but I kept reminding myself why I was doing it - for my baby and my own health.

I tried to quit a few times without support when I was younger but never managed it. I used to smoke a lot socially, especially when going out with friends or having a few drinks, so it was really tough to break the habit.

Now, I still go out and socialise but I don’t even think about smoking.

The support from my QuitReady Pregnancy Specialist Barbora was amazing. She stayed in regular contact with me and even visited me at home, which made a big difference.

Since quitting, I’ve noticed real improvements in my health - even my dentist said my gums no longer bleed like they used to. I also benefited from the QuitReady shopping voucher scheme, which gave me extra motivation.*

I would definitely recommend trying to quit, especially with the QuitReady programme on your side. It’s helped me more than I ever expected. Even after having my baby, I’ve stayed smoke-free, and I don’t plan on going back.

Why is it important to quit smoking during pregnancy?

  1. Improved Oxygen Supply: Your baby will receive more oxygen, supporting healthy growth and development
  2. Reduced Risk of Complications: You’ll lower the chances of premature birth, low birth weight, and other serious health issues
  3. Better Overall Health: Quitting smoking reduces the risk of complications such as high blood pressure, placental issues, and infection
  4. Healthier Future for Your Baby: Quitting during pregnancy reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), childhood asthma, and behavioural problems later in life
