Food for thought in Leicestershire

✍️ Gavin Fletcher, Public Health Programmes Coordinator explains how the recent Food Conversations training sessions has helped bring together volunteers, residents and staff to make a real difference in Leicestershire

Leicestershire is full of food talent: farmers, growers, makers, markets, cafés and cooks in every community.

When I attended recent Food Conversations training sessions, I joined volunteers, residents and staff to share real experiences. We focused on a simple question: what helps people eat well and what opportunities could make food choices easier and more enjoyable? One message really stayed with me: be the change you want to support others to make.

A few strong themes stood out to me:

  • I heard that people want more chances to grow food locally. Ideas like community allotments, shared gardens and small growing spaces came up again and again. They’re not just about affordability they bring people together and help people feel more connected to where their food comes from.
  • Families told me they want practical cooking skills for children. It was clear that giving young people hands-on experience in the kitchen can set them up for life and make healthy eating feel achievable.
  • I saw how important clear, trustworthy information is. When guidance is easy to understand, people feel more confident and in control of their choices whether they’re planning meals or shopping on a budget.
  • And people spoke about wanting environments that support good choices. Small, everyday nudges like making healthier options easier to find can make real difference.

These themes reflect wider trends but hearing them directly from local people really brought home just how much good food matters in everyday life. It’s about confidence in the kitchen, access to fresh produce, learning through doing, taking pride in our local landscapes and farmers, and building strong, healthy communities.

What happens next

From what I’ve learned, these insights will help shape the next phase of Good Food work in Leicestershire. This includes:

  • supporting community growing and food projects
  • improving how services and local groups work together
  • longer-term planning to support residents’ health
  • showcasing ‘Good Food’ Leicestershire
  • ensuring local experiences feed into wider conversations about food

How you can get involved

I’m keen for more people to be part of this. There will be many more Food Conversations across Leicestershire in the coming months, with a focus on listening to voices that are often missed. Every conversation helps build a clearer picture of what residents need to enjoy better food and better health.

I believe food is one of Leicestershire’s greatest assets and something we should all feel proud of. The more we talk, listen and collaborate, the stronger our good food story will become.

How to take part:

  • Join a local Food Conversation — dates will be shared through community venues, partners and online channels, or email goodfood@leics.gov.uk.
