Whole school approach to food

Primary schools and Leicestershire residents are being urged to share their views on the current Whole School Approach to Food programme.

This consultation runs from Monday 19 October to Monday 7 December (midnight).

We are proposing to stop the current Food for Life service when the contract comes to an end in November 2027 and provide healthy, weight, food and nutrition support in the future differently.

Future healthy weight, food and nutrition support will be delivered through a wider range of interventions, creating opportunities for a more flexible and responsive approach that can adapt to local needs and emerging priorities.

School engagement with the current programme has declined in recent years, resulting in the commissioned model reaching fewer schools and pupils. A recent engagement exercise highlighted competing school priorities and limited capacity as significant barriers to participation.

Schools continue to provide food education, healthy eating activities and school meals regardless of this programme. Food for Life is an additional support offer.

Have your say

We would like to hear your views on proposed changes to how we provide healthy weight, food and nutrition support to schools in the future, and which aspects would be most helpful. We are particularly keen to hear from schools about the challenges they are facing and the support they need.
