About the project
Project Gigahubs was a national initiative led by the UK Government to provide full fibre broadband connections to public sector buildings like schools, libraries, and council facilities in mostly rural communities.
Full fibre connectivity means:
- faster and more reliable internet for public services
- improved access to digital resources for students and residents
- stronger foundations for future community and economic development

Coverage in Leicestershire
In October 2022, we secured government funding to deliver full fibre infrastructure to 43 public sector sites across the county. These sites were in locations where commercial providers were unlikely to invest due to high costs or limited access. The project reached completion in March 2024.
Thanks to this investment, the following public buildings now benefit from gigabit-capable broadband:
- 30 schools
- 7 libraries
- 3 waste sites
- 3 council depots
These upgrades support better digital services, enhance learning environments, and improve operational efficiency across rural Leicestershire.
