Leicestershire’s cared for children are showcasing their lives through a lens with their very own photography exhibition.

More than 100 images by children and young people of all ages feature in the pop-up display which will run in Leicester’s Highcross from January 19 to 23.

Organised by Leicestershire County Council’s Virtual School, the 12 month ‘Our year of belonging through a lens’ included participants attending workshops to learn how to use a camera.

Images range from nature to football goal posts to family members, all exploring the idea of belonging and identity.

Councillor Charles Pugsley, lead member for children and families at Leicestershire County Council, said: “There are some fantastic submissions, many of which are reflective and provide a personal insight into what belonging means to our cared for children.

“Many carers also got involved, supporting young people at home to take photos of things that make them feel included.

“We’re proud to be supporting our children and young people in care and of the wonderful work they have produced. If you happen to be out and about in the Highcross, do drop in and take a look for yourself.”

The Virtual School works to support the education of more than 1,000 children in care and care leavers by supporting early years settings, schools, carers and social workers to help children and young people do their best.

It worked with a variety of county schools on the project, and had photos submitted through some of its groups such as ‘Care to Dance’.

The exhibition can be found in a unit in the upper mall of the Highcross shopping centre, next to Boots, and runs from Monday, January 19 – Friday, January 23 between 10am – 3pm.
