A major scheme to improve the A511 between Coalville and Ashby-de-la-Zouch has taken a significant step forward.

Taylor Woodrow has been selected to provide early contractor involvement (ECI) for the £65m project, which aims to reduce congestion, improve journey times, and enhance road safety along this key transport corridor of Leicestershire.

Working in conjunction with Leicestershire County Council, Taylor Woodrow will carry out essential pre-construction planning ahead of the main construction phase which is scheduled to begin in 2026.

The appointment marks a significant milestone in progressing this critical infrastructure project aimed at supporting growth, reducing congestion, and improving connectivity across the region.

Taylor Woodrow has a solid track record in delivering major improvement schemes. We’ll work with the contractor closely, refining the scheme ahead of construction starting next year.

Matthew Stubbings, Business Unit Director for Taylor Woodrow, said: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to work with Leicestershire County Council to deliver this important piece of infrastructure work. Our experience in providing high profile projects of this type, which spans many years, will greatly enhance the efficiency with which this work is completed so that any inconvenience to the people of Leicestershire is kept to a minimum.”

The Department for Transport (DfT) had provisionally allocated £41.7m towards the upgrades.  The remaining funding shortfall being addressed through Section 106 contributions secured from the private sector.  In July 2025, the government reconfirmed its funding contribution towards the improvement scheme, subject to the approval of a final business case.

The A511 major road network (MRN) growth corridor scheme proposes to make improvements to multiple locations between the A42 junction 13 near Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the A50 Field Head roundabout near Markfield (east of the M1 Junction 22). This will include upgrading a section of Stephenson Way from single to dual carriageway, plus the construction of a new link road extending southwards from the A511 Bardon Road roundabout and linking with the housing development on Grange Road.
