Applications for an impartial person to carry out a key decision-making role must be submitted by 4 January 2026.
The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Police and Crime Panel is responsible for publicly scrutinising the actions and decisions of the Police and Crime Commissioner. The work of the panel is facilitated by the county council.
The panel can appoint two independent members who are not elected by the public. Independent members are recruited to ensure the panel has the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to work effectively.
"The Police and Crime Panel have a key role in monitoring and scrutinising the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Independent members bring an outside voice that give such valuable input alongside our cross-party panel of councillors.
"This is a chance to help ensure the Police and Crime Commissioner delivers an effective and efficient police force.
"I’d like to thank our outgoing independent member for their contribution over the last four years and encourage anyone who feels they can bring insight, experience and enthusiasm to the role to apply and help make a difference to our work."
Current Chair, Councillor Les Phillimore
“Being part of the Police and Crime Panel is so rewarding and my knowledge of youth justice brings a really important perspective.
“I know my skills and experience are being used to make a difference in holding the Police and Crime Commissioner to account. I would encourage anyone who thinks they might be suitable to apply.”
Current independent Member Parisha Chavda
A good candidate for this role should be able to think strategically, make good judgements, be objective and supportive, as well as able to scrutinise and challenge analytically. Experience in policing, justice or the public sector may be beneficial to support the panel’s work but is not essential.
This role has a 4-year term and only one new independent member will be recruited on this occasion. Applicants must not be politically affiliated, an elected member, or a serving police officer.
More information on the application process is available on our jobs and volunteering page.
