Stop smoking team making a difference in secondary schools

Anti-vaping support for young people

Councillor Michael Squires and others

To mark a one-year milestone, the council’s QuitReady team ran an anti-vaping poster competition and received over 300 entries.

The winning design, created by Delilah from Charnwood College, was chosen by County Council leads.

Delilah said: “I wanted my poster to show that vaping isn’t risk free and that quitting is possible. I don’t vape myself, but I know lots of young people do. The risks aren’t always obvious.”

Charnwood College has supported the programme from the start – which includes workshops for pupils - and helped share important messages and encouraging healthier choices.

Tracey Rowe, Charnwood College Principal, said: “We’re proud to be part of this initiative. It’s vital that our students understand the risks of vaping and feel empowered to make healthy decisions. Seeing their creativity and commitment through this competition has been inspiring.”

"Vaping among young people remains a national concern. According to Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), around 20% of 11–17-year-olds in Great Britain have tried vaping and 7% currently vape, despite the ban on disposable vapes and restrictions on flavours."

Councillor Michael Squires, Cabinet Member for Health said: “Vaping can have a bigger impact upon young people’s mental and physical wellbeing than it does in adults.

"Our main message is simple: if you don’t smoke, don’t start vaping.

"That’s why working with schools matters so much to us. Initiatives like this give young people a voice, which helps to spread the message and support from friends makes a real difference.

"We want every young person to feel confident, empowered and informed when making decisions regarding their health. Our QuitReady team is here to support anyone in Leicestershire who wants to quit.”

Leicestershire County Council’s stop smoking team provide free, confidential, support and guidance to anyone who wishes to quit both smoking and vaping.

Help around underage vaping can be found at the QuitReady website. Parents, carers and young people can all submit a referral form, call 0345 646 6666 or email quitreadyyp@leics.gov.uk get in touch with the team.
