There are benefits and financial help available depending on your disability or the disability of the person you care for.
Benefits and financial support you could claim
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children under 16 and may help with the extra costs of being disabled if you are under 16. If you are awarded DLA for your child and claim Universal Credit, Income Support, ESA or Child Tax Credits, you will need to notify them of any award.
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is replacing DLA if you are aged 16 to 64.
- Child Benefit for children in hospital or care - Your child benefit payments might be affected if your child goes into hospital or 'residential care' for more than 12 weeks.
- Carers Allowance - If you care for someone more than 35 hours a week and they get certain benefits.
- Carer's Credit - You could get this if you are caring for someone for at least 20 hours a week.
- Universal Credit - You may be able to get it if you’re on a low income, out of work or you cannot work.
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) can be claimed if your illness or disability affects your ability to work.
