1620s House and Garden has improved its rating as a tourist attraction after an inspection by VisitEngland.
The historic house in Donington le Heath, managed by Leicestershire County Council, received its highest marks yet – an overall score of 93%, from the VisitEngland team as part of their annual inspection.
In giving the score, the inspector said that: “The surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained and feature period-appropriate plants and layouts, adding to the authentic experience. The knowledgeable staff and engaging exhibitions enhance the educational value, making it an excellent destination for anyone visiting the area.”
It was noted that the house and garden are maintained to the highest standard - with the appearance of the house being described as “a captivating blend of period architecture and carefully curated interiors”.
A perfect score was achieved in the cleanliness section, with the inspector stating: “The dedication to cleanliness is evident and greatly appreciated by visitors, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of the house and gardens without any distractions.”
The inspector’s report also highly praised the way staff welcome visitors along with the guided tour, calling it the “highlight of the visit” that “provides a deeper understanding and appreciation of the 1620s House and Garden and leaves guests with a memorable and enriching experience.”
“It is fantastic to see 1620s House and Garden achieve another outstanding score and be recognised by such a prestigious organisation as VisitEngland.
“The comments in the report are a true testament to how hard the staff and volunteers work to ensure our wonderful hidden gem in the heart of Donington le Heath remains an exceptional place to visit attracting new visitors year on year.”

The authentic experience offered at the 1620s House and Garden has earned it nominations for three prestigious VisitEngland awards and put it in the running for VisitEngland’s highest accolade – gold status.
The historic 700 year-old house could also win recognition in the Welcome, Best Told Story, and Hidden Gem categories, following a glowing inspection report from the national tourism body.
People can experience the wonder of the 1620s House and Garden for free this September as part of the month-long Hello Heritage Festival in North West Leicestershire when it opens its doors free of charge on the 15 September.
