A6 Kibworth Leicester Road / Wistow Road Roundabout Scheme

Planned highway improvements to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at the A6 Leicester Road / Wistow Road roundabout.

Scheme overview

Leicestershire County Council will be carrying out highway improvement works at the A6 Leicester Road / Wistow Road roundabout in Kibworth. We plan to start construction in summer 2027 and aim to complete the scheme in winter 2027.

The Wistow Road roundabout currently experiences congestion at peak times and operates over capacity. This can lead to long queues and unreliable journey times. The improvements to the roundabout layout will increase capacity which will reduce delays and better accommodate future traffic growth associated with new development in the area.

Some disruption is expected during construction. These impacts will be minimised through a detailed Construction Traffic Management Plan prepared in advance.

Key benefits of the scheme

  • Improved traffic flow
  • Improved lane utilisation
  • Reduced congestion and queuing at peak times
  • Improved journey time reliability
  • Increased junction capacity
  • Improved road safety for all users
  • Widened footway areas and cycleways
  • New toucan crossing on Wistow Road

Benefits to Kibworth

This scheme will support development in Kibworth by:

  • Increasing junction capacity
  • Improving the A6 corridor’s resilience
  • Supporting planned transport network development

Proposed scheme layout

Scheme background

In 2017, Leicestershire County Council and Harborough District Council looked into cumulative development in the area. A study identified necessary improvements at key junctions along the route to mitigate the impacts of that cumulative development. As a result, Harborough District Council was able to secure Section 106 funding from developers to contribute towards improvements that reduced their development impact.  In 2021, we reviewed the proposals within the original study against new traffic data to identify if those proposals were still fit for purpose.

Three junctions were reviewed, and the A6 / Wistow Road roundabout was identified as the priority location for scheme intervention. The roundabout improvement layout was shown through modelling to provide the greatest benefit, particularly by ensuring both southbound lanes on the A6 are fully utilised when entering the junction.

These improvements are necessary to support development in and around Kibworth while improving conditions for all road users. Funding for the scheme has been secured through Section 106 developer contributions.
