The A6 through Oadby is a busy road that many people need to cross on foot or by bike to reach the town centre, places of worship, shops, and bus stops. We have identified locations where improvements will make the biggest difference to safety.
Works are scheduled to start on 3 August 2026 and include:
- new and upgraded signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings
- improved crossing facilities at Regent Street, and across Harborough Road / Leicester Road
- raised crossings that bring the road up to pavement level on Lyndhurst Road, Stoughton Road, and Victoria Court at their junctions with the A6
- a raised crossing on the north western section of Oadby Court at its junction with Brabazon Road
- improvements to footways, including resurfacing
- renewal of existing vehicle traffic signals equipment
- resurfacing of the road/carriageway between the Brabazon Road and New Street junctions on the A6
- new pedestrian and cycle crossing on Brabazon Road
There are no proposed changes to permitted vehicle turning movements, or to the speed limit.
Construction
There will be various traffic management measures in place during the works, including temporary traffic lights and lane closures. At times, closures of some side roads will also be needed to safely facilitate the works.
During the works:
- Access for refuse collection will be maintained
- Some bus stops may need to be suspended or relocated for a short time (advance signs will be posted before any temporary suspension or relocations).
- Access to all affected properties will be maintained throughout the construction period (clear signage and staff on-site, will be present to assist with access and to ensure safety).

Phasing
The works will be split into two phases:
Phase 1 – Construction around The Parade junction will start on 3 August 2026 and last for approximately 16 weeks.
Phase 2 – Construction around the Brabazon Road junction will start mid-January 2027 and will complete in early April 2027. Phase 2 designs are being finalised.
Benefits
- Safer crossings protect everyone on foot and reduce vehicle collisions
- Raised crossings at side roads improve visibility between drivers and pedestrians, while shorter crossing distances make roads easier and safer to cross
- Modernised signal equipment with detection ensures vulnerable users are protected and given the time they need to cross safely
- Traffic signals using visual vehicle detection, rather than induction loops, increase equipment reliability
- Disruption is minimised by combining the works with planned resurfacing maintenance
Funding
The council was successful in a bid to Active Travel England the government agency within the Department for Transport responsible for promoting walking, wheeling, and cycling.
Active Travel England awarded nearly £900k towards the scheme. We are providing a further £1 million from established active travel budgets. The budget for the scheme is £1.9 million.
