The A6 through Oadby is a busy road that many people need to cross on foot or by bike to reach the town centre, places of worship, shops, and bus stops. We have identified locations where improvements will make the biggest difference to safety.
Latest updates
The first phase of the scheme is progressing as planned and is expected to be completed by the end of November.
Work on the south-west corner of the junction is largely complete. Work on Lyndhurst Road and Stoughton Road is also nearly finished, with only some final footway resurfacing still to be done. The raised crossing tables at these junctions will be built once resurfacing is complete in November.
At the Stoughton Road junction, the kerb has been extended into the road and the footway widened. This narrows the side road and reduces the distance people walking or cycling need to cross.
Construction is also underway on the Regent Street corner, which will become a new seating and planting area.
The next stage of work will focus on the:
- traffic islands around The Parade junction
- footway between Regent Street and Stoughton Road.
One of the final stages of the project will be switching on the new permanent traffic signals. This is scheduled for the end of November.
Road closures
The A6 will be resurfaced overnight starting 9 November 2026.
We will be resurfacing the A6 Harborough Road between the Brabazon Road junction and the New Street junction. To do this safely, the road will be closed overnight.
Both carriageways will be closed on weekday nights (Monday to Friday) between Monday 9 November and Friday 27 November, from 8pm to 6am.
The road will reopen at 6am each morning. The A6 is one of Oadby's busiest roads. Carrying out the work overnight avoids daytime closures and helps keep disruption to a minimum.
Resurfacing depends on the weather, so dates may change. Any change will be posted on this page.
Resurfacing work requires heavy machinery and some noise is unavoidable.
We will do all we can to keep noise to a minimum and thank residents for their patience.
Diversion route
The signed diversion route is via Brabazon Road, Chestnut Avenue, Leicester Road and London Road. Residents of Regent Street and the surrounding area will still be able to access their properties via New Street, Stoughton Road and Pelham Street.
During the closures, the following will be closed at their junction with the A6:
- The Parade
- Regent Street
- Stoughton Road
- Lyndhurst Road
- North Street
- East Street
- some streets off them, such as Sandhurst Street

Access to your home / businesses
Every effort will be made to maintain access for residents within the closure area, but there may be delays while work is under way.
If you live within the closure area and need to use your vehicle during a closure, please park outside the closure area before 8pm.
Parking on the A6 within the closed section will not be permitted on closure nights.
Footways will remain open throughout the works, so you will still be able to travel through the area on foot or by cycle.

Planned work
Works are scheduled to start on 3 August 2026 and includes:
- new and upgraded signal-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings
- improved crossing facilities at Regent Street, and across Harborough Road / Leicester Road
- raised crossings that bring the road up to pavement level on Lyndhurst Road, Stoughton Road, and Victoria Court at their junctions with the A6
- a raised crossing on the north western section of Oadby Court at its junction with Brabazon Road
- improvements to footways, including resurfacing
- renewal of existing vehicle traffic signals equipment
- resurfacing of the road/carriageway between the Brabazon Road and New Street junctions on the A6
- new pedestrian and cycle crossing on Brabazon Road
There are no proposed changes to permitted vehicle turning movements, or to the speed limit.
Construction
There will be various traffic management measures in place during the works, including temporary traffic lights and lane closures. At times, closures of some side roads will also be needed to safely facilitate the works.
During the works:
- Access for refuse collection will be maintained
- Some bus stops may need to be suspended or relocated for a short time (signs will be posted before any temporary suspension or relocations)
- Every effort will be made to maintain access to all affected properties throughout the construction period, although there may be delays while work is under way, including during the overnight resurfacing closures (clear signage and staff on site will be present to assist with access and to ensure safety)

Phasing
The works will be split into two phases:
Phase 1 – Construction around The Parade junction will start on 3 August 2026 and last for approximately 16 weeks.
Phase 2 – Construction around the Brabazon Road junction will start mid-January 2027 and will complete in early April 2027. Phase 2 designs are being finalised.
Benefits
- Safer crossings protect everyone on foot and reduce vehicle collisions
- Raised crossings at side roads improve visibility between drivers and pedestrians, while shorter crossing distances make roads easier and safer to cross
- Modernised signal equipment with detection ensures vulnerable users are protected and given the time they need to cross safely
- Traffic signals using visual vehicle detection, rather than induction loops, increase equipment reliability
- Disruption is minimised by combining the works with planned resurfacing maintenance
Funding
The council was successful in a bid to Active Travel England the government agency within the Department for Transport responsible for promoting walking, wheeling, and cycling.
Active Travel England awarded nearly £900k towards the scheme. We are providing a further £1 million from established active travel budgets. The budget for the scheme is £1.9 million.
