The need for a transport plan

Some of the reasons for a new transport plan that we've identified.

Local transport is central to people’s lives. Almost all journeys begin and end on local transport networks. Leicestershire’s transport network has a key role in enabling movement across the county, regionally and nationally, to enable local communities to achieve their ambitions through access to key services and employment opportunities.

The transport network is also important to support and deliver economic growth and prosperity by providing access to key markets locally, regionally, nationally, and globally.

There are a wide range of reasons why a flexible transport plan is needed, including:

  • increasing demand on the transport network
  • changes in travel behaviour
  • greater movement of fright and logistics
  • demand for travel choice
  • an ageing population
  • education and employment travel needs
  • transport and health
  • the impact of severe weather

Our fourth Local Transport Plan (LTP4) sets out our sets out our vision for transport to 2050. It explains how we'll make sure that transport continues to play an important part in Leicestershire's success.
