What is it like working as an apprentice with the Council?

Before I joined the Council, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, I was 23, working long hours in the catering industry working and I wanted a change. The apprenticeship at Leicestershire County Council offered me a wage I could live off and learn at the same time. I have since progressed into further roles in which I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do so without doing my apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships are a complete change from something such as full-time education. They involve you working a full-time job, whilst also completing a qualification, in Level 2, 3 or above, so you can earn while you learn. Getting the balance right can be quite challenging, so you’ll need the following qualities:

  • Self-motivated
  • A good communicator
  • Flexible
  • Someone who enjoys working in a diverse organisation, that is inclusive from all ethnic backgrounds, gender identities, abilities and sexual orientation
  • Able to manage your time well
  • Able to work in a team
  • Manage your work as well as your training

Apprenticeships at Leicestershire County Council

A place of opportunity

Here at Leicestershire County Council, we pride ourselves on the opportunities we provide to our apprentices. We aim to provide them with the necessary skills and experience that will allow them to flourish in their careers, whether it’s with the council or elsewhere.

As an apprentice you will be treated the same as every other council employee and will have the same right to join our worker’s groups (LGBT+, Black workers, Disabled workers etc.), as well as becoming a member of our various recreational teams.

Our Benefits

We want to attract the best apprentices, so we pay the  full salary for that role, which is higher than the apprenticeship minimum wage. However, pay isn’t the main reason why staff tend to stay. There are many benefits we provide, including:

Emotional support and wellbeing

We have:

  • A positive and supportive working environment
  • Regular supervision from your line manager
  • An employee counselling service

More for Leics Benefits Scheme

The More for Leics Benefit scheme gives access to an employee benefits platform and digital discount card, offering a variety of local and national offers and discounts.

As an apprentice you can also apply for an apprentice NUS card to get discounts at many other stores on the high street.

What do our apprentices say about working with us?

I can only praise the apprenticeship scheme at LCC. Whilst I was an apprentice, I was the recipient of many opportunities and experiences, all of which have immensely helped me since, both in my career and personal life. One of those opportunities was working in Germany for a month, something which I never thought I’d be able to do!
