Fancy swapping some skills? Timebanking is here!

Time4Leicestershire is our free skills exchange initiative, where members can sign up to share their skills and knowledge and can request skills they would like to learn in return.   ✍Emma Ward, Time4Leicestershire Outreach Worker

Do I have to pay to join?

No, it’s absolutely free! You exchange credits on the Timebank, not money – so for every hour that you offer your skill to someone, you gain one hour of credit that you can exchange with anyone on the platform. Everyone’s skill is valued the same. One hour = One credit. Not only does it not cost anything, you can potentially save money by asking a Timebank member to do something for you that you might have had to otherwise pay for.

I’m worried the scheme isn’t safe or secure

We ask for two character references from everyone who applies – this must be someone who has known the person for at least two years but can’t be a family member. We do follow up all references to make sure they are genuine. All new members have to attend an induction session before they are approved on the website, at which we talk about the dos and don’ts of Timebanking, and how to Timebank safely.

What type of skills can I swap?

We’re looking for people with all kinds of skills! From practical skills like DIY or crafts, to ‘lend a hand’ type skills of giving someone a lift or collecting someone’s prescription. We’re also looking for ‘life skills’ that you might not even consider  – ironing a shirt, paying a bill, planning meals or setting up a bank account – all skills! If you’ve got an unusual interest, like beekeeping, or Morris dancing, we’re equally keen to hear from you – we’re sure people would be fascinated to learn more about it. If you’re in an existing club or group, you can even earn credits by bringing a potential new member found through the Timebank along with you, which benefits, you, the other member, and your group – it’s win, win, win!

I don’t live in Charnwood or Melton, can I join?

At the moment, the scheme is only open to residents of Melton and Charnwood boroughs. We‘re in the exciting phase of rolling out our district Timebanks across the county, so if you don’t have a Timebank near you yet, you will soon!

Why have LCC created a scheme like this in the first place?

Timebanking is an established concept, we can’t take credit for having invented it! There are Timebanking communities all over the world. Timebanking was launched in Leicestershire as communities recovered from the pandemic. Timebanking has been shown to increase community resilience by building networks, help to reduce social isolation and increase mental and physical wellbeing by creating social connections, and improve confidence by providing opportunities for people to widen their skills.

How do I earn credits to start Timebanking?

Everyone who signs up automatically gets gifted 5 credits to start them off.  We also have a community pot of credits that we can use - if you have an idea for a community Timebank project, get in touch and let’s make it happen

How can I sign up?

You can find more information or sign up (If you are a Melton or Charnwood resident) by visiting our Time4Leicestershire website. If you have any questions that aren’t covered here or on the website then you can get in touch with us through email, time4leicestershire@leics.gov.uk
